75-year old cancer patient, Don Wright, is on the verge of achieving his goal to finish at least 100 marathons since he was diagnosed 13 years ago. Don was told then he had the blood cancer multiple myeloma. At that time doctors gave Don only three to five years to live. Now Don plans to run his 98th marathon with cancer, while on active treatment, at the 20th Air Force Marathon in Dayton, Ohio, September 17th.

Last week, an article entitled “Why Are Cancer Drugs So Expensive in the United States, and What Are the Solutions?” written by Dr. Hagop Kantarjian and Dr. S. Vincent Rajkumar was published on the Mayo Clinic Proceedings website. To patients struggling to meet their payments this may sound appealing. However, we are concerned that pushing this approach may reduce the development of innovative life-changing drugs. The authors of this article disregarded the value of new, innovative cancer therapies in favor of an array of misstatements and unsupported claims.
